SHILLONG: The proposal for construction of a permanent juvenile home at Mawdiangdiang still hangs fire. Official sources on Saturday revealed that the State Government is still examining the concept paper for the project which was submitted to it back in 2010.

According to official sources, the department was supposed to prepare a full-fledged Detailed Project Report (DPR) after the Government accepted the concept paper.

The State Government, sources said has already allotted five acres of land at Mawdiangdiang for the purpose. The land is in the custody of the Social Welfare department, sources added.

The department plans to construct two separate homes for boys and girls in the proposed land at Mawdiangdiang.

“Besides keeping space for outdoor activities, we are also aiming to reserve some land for agricultural purpose in the proposed juvenile home. The idea is to teach the inmates to do some farming during their stay in the juvenile home” official sources added.

At present the juvenile home is being run from a rented house at Cleve Colony.

“The existing juvenile home can accommodate up to 40 inmates,” sources said adding that the place is too congested and lacks proper space for the outdoor activities of the inmates.

“Being an old wooden house, the present structure has also become very weak,” official sources added.
