‘Need to create town committees’

SHILLONG: Opposition leader Pynshgnain N Syiem has suggested that there is a need to create the town committees as mandated in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to prevent the intrusion of the Urban Affairs department concerning with the developmental projects of the scheduled areas.
“If the town committees were in place, the Council would have been responsible in implementing the various schemes under JNNURM in the scheduled areas,” Syiem said while participating in the cut motion during the Council Summer Session here on Monday.
According to Syiem, the previous EC had tried to bring an amendment to insert a clause in the existing Act to allow the Executive Committee to appoint an Adhoc Town Committee pending election of the members of the Town Committee outside the municipal areas.
In reply, KHADC CEM Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said that the EC would examine the possibilities to constitute of the town committees in the various areas within the jurisdiction of the Council.
