SHILLONG: As per the scheduled programme of action, NEHUTA took out a march of teachers of NEHU this afternoon to protest against Vice-Chancellor’s indifferent attitude to ‘review committee report on Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) for teachers.

As the march reached VC’s office, the VC, Prof. Prabodh Shukla received the memorandum of NEHUTA.

The President V. Ruata Rengsi read out the memorandum and handed it to the Vice Chancellor.

NEHUTA in a statement issued here on Monday said that the Vice-Chancellor voiced pessimism on the Review Committee Report and the teachers pointed out the irony that the same Vice-Chancellor who had constituted the Review Committee to look into the anomalies pertaining to the date of promotion of the teachers in relation to UGC norms is now expressing helplessness.

The NEHUTA in its previous memorandum had pointed out that there have been precedents where NEHU Executive Council has reviewed its own decision and made correction of the date of promotion.

The Memorandum pointed out that teachers’ date of promotion is predetermined by length of service and meeting certain other criteria. The Selection Committee has no role in altering and tampering such date of promotion.

As per UGC Regulations, the Selection Committee can decide on whether the teacher qualifies in the interview or not, but it has no mandate to determine the date of promotion.

According to the teachers, the review committee report had clearly pointed this out in the very preamble of the report.

The NEHUTA felt that the Vice-Chancellor was giving a short shrift to the report that is so legitimately culled through due process of law under University’s Executive Council. The NEHUTA regrets that such a grave injustice is committed by the same Executive Council that instituted such a remedial report in its fine print.

It was also observed that the three cases of teachers that were sent to UGC by the University, the Executive Council rejected even the recommendations of UGC.

NEHUTA memorandum pointed out that given the VC’s anti-teacher and anti-academic attitude, the NEHUTA will have no other option but to go for non-cooperation with NEHU administration after July 7, if no positive step is initiated by then.

The community of teachers expressed its solidarity and determination to fight out the deliberate perpetuation of injustice on the career of teachers, which according to them would ultimately affect students who come for education in the premier university of Northeast India.
