Concern over stoic silence on Garo Hills unrest

SHILLONG: The stoic silence of the pressure groups, NGOs and political leaders from Garo Hills on the worsening law and order situation in Garo Hills has compelled Independent legislator from Gambegre constituency Saleng Sangma to seek President’s Rule in Meghalaya.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Meghalaya Governor KK Paul, on Wednesday Saleng wondered what has happened to the Garo Hills based NGOs, church leaders and the civil society members who are not protesting the killings, kidnappings and abductions taking place in Garo Hills at a time when the residents of Mancachar and nearby areas are agitated over the killing of 30-year-old labourer from Assam in West Garo Hills. The agitated people had burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and demanded President’s rule in Meghalaya.

“However, I don’t know why there is no protest by the residents of Meghalaya against the worsening law and order situation”.

When there was President’s rule during the tenure of former Governor RS Mooshahary, there was a semblance of governance whereas there is a lack of proper administration in the State at present, he added.
