NEW DELHI: Mawsynram and Cherrapunji are not in the Tentative List for consideration of inscription to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites.

“A property has to be first listed under the Tentative List for the World Heritage Committee to consider a nomination for its inscription,” Union Minister of State for Culture and Tourism, Shripad Naik said.

He was replying to a question by Wansuk Syiem who wanted to know if the Ministry is considering proposing nominations of Mawsynram and Cherrapunji to UNESCO for recognition as World Heritage Sites.

The Minister said that the World Heritage Convention has defined a set of 10 criteria under any one or more of which, a property can be considered for inscription to the list of world heritage. “The dossiers for inscription of the properties to the list of world heritage under natural category are prepared by the respective State Governments in consultation with expert individuals/ organisations,” he said.

“The Meghalaya Government has taken several steps such as promotional literature in flight magazines, participation in tourism trade fairs at national and international venues and enhancement of tourist facilities in Mawsynram and Cherrapunji,” the Minister added.
