Allotment to officers

SHILLONG: The Social Organization Of Meghalaya Against Land Alienation has said that there is a lack of clarity on the provisions of the land transfer act as far as the handing over of land to Civil Services Officers Housing Cooperative Society at New Shillong Township in the wake of the High Court order that dismissed the petition filed by an NGO against the allotment of land to the cooperative society at Re 1 per sq ft.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, SOMALA convenor W Anthony said that in view of the court’s decision the question arises whether the state government will abide by the suggestions of the High Court or the constitutional provisions of the Sixth Schedule which safeguards the land of the tribals against any transfer to non-tribals in the Sixth Schedule areas.

“It appears that the question of the Meghalaya Transfer of Land Regulation Act 1971 never arose,” he said.
