SHILLONG: Shillong roads do not have dividers and it becomes a challenging task for anyone to cross the road during traffic snarls which often leads to accidents.

With an aim to reduce such problems, East Khasi Hills Police have implemented an innovative idea at Barik Point to help in reducing traffic snarls as well as to enable pedestrians to cross the road safely without any accident.

A Square Zone has been created at Barik Point. Pedestrians who want to cross the road can reach the Square Zone and wait there for a few seconds and they again can cross over to other side of the road when there is no vehicle.

The Square Zone has been marked with yellow lines.

Similarly, yellow lines have also been created at the junction and vehicles would not be allowed to cross the yellow line.

The idea has been conceptualized on a trial basis and it will be extended to other junctions of the city depending on its success.
