SHILLLONG: The State Urban Affairs Department is keen to introduce another 240 buses to boost public transport system in the city.

Acceding to persistent demands from the Meghalaya Government, the Centre had, last year, approved another fleet of 240 buses for the State following a meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee on bus funding and ancillary infrastructure projects under the JNNURM.

Principle Secretary, Urban Affairs, P. Naik said that with the addition of 240 buses the waiting time for passengers would be minimized in all the routes, and further claimed that apart from minor hiccups, the buses have largely helped residents of the city.

He also informed that the new lot of buses will replace the older buses which have become non-functional.

The Government will soon invite expression of interest for operation of the buses as well as the maxi cabs.
