SHILLONG: The ‘arbitrary’ spot billing being carried out by MeECL has come under flak with Opposition UDP set to raise the issue before the State Government and MeECL during its proposed meeting to be held on Monday .
Electricity bills of consumers have shot up abnormally after the spot billing was introduced by the MeECL from August .
In a statement issued here on Sunday, UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh said that the spot billing is arbitrary, discriminatory and against the interest of the people considering the current economic situation in the state.
Lyngdoh, who is also the spokesperson of UDP, said that the implementation of fixed spot billing was unwarranted and illogical “since the number of days of energy consumption varies from one house to another.”
“If MeECL imposes fixed spot billing, people of the State have the right to impose penalty on MeECL for many hours of shut down while the business entity assures 24×7 service”, Lyngdoh said.
The UDP will also hold a separate meeting with the Dorbar Shnongs to discuss the matter, Lyngdoh added.
