Rally against child sexual abuse
Chennai: Students of Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University on Tuesday took out a rally to enhance awareness on sexual offences against children and the laws to protect juveniles against such crimes. Students raised slogans on the need to prevent sexual abuse against children as such crimes would have a lasting adverse impact on them. “Approach the child helpline 1098”, a placard read. Slogans explaining child protection laws and the need for better awareness among parents were raised. State Law Minister S P Velumani flagged off the rally. “Although there are laws to protect children against sexual abuse, there is no adequate awareness among the public,” Vice chancellor Prof Vangamudi said. The rally was held as part of the World Humanitarian Day celebrations at the University. (PTI)
Youth wanted for cop’s murder killed in encounter
Delhi: A 28-year-youth who had allegedly shot dead a Delhi Police constable last month was killed in an encounter with a police team in the wee hours here today. The incident took place in North East Delhi’s Sonia Vihar area around 5:30 AM here. The accused identified as Firoz alias Fauji, an Uttar Pradesh-based suspected gangster, was on a motorcycle when a team from the Special Cell of Delhi Police intercepted him and asked him to surrender. “Instead of stopping, Firoz tried to flee opening fire on the police party. In retaliatory fire made by the police, he was hit in the abdomen. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. A weapon was recovered from his possession,” said a senior police official. Police was hot on the heals of Firoz as he was wanted in the murder of 43-year-old Delhi Police constable Shivraj Singh, who was allegedly shot dead by him in Shahadara area in North East Delhi on July 24. “Firoz was a known criminal in East Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh. He was involved in a number of cases of robberies and snatching,” the official added. PTI (PTI)
TN Guv calls for complete eradication of ragging
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah today called for “complete eradication” of ragging in educational institutions as five cases were registered in the state this year so far. The Governor held fifth meeting of the state level monitoring cell to eradicate ragging which was attended by Higher Education Minister P Palaniappan, Chief Secretary Mohan Verghese Chunkath, Secretaries for Home and Higher Education, and DGP K Ramanujam. The Governor, who is the chairman of the cell, appreciated the efforts of the authorities concerned in eradicating ragging and urged that the steps in this direction should continue, a Raj Bhavan release said. “The Governor reiterated that there cannot be any laxity and the authorities should keep a constant vigil,” it said. He also asked that top priority be given to Supreme Court guidelines about registration of private commercially managed hostels which are outside the campuses of institutions. (PTI)
