SHILLONG: Labour Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has urged the Centre to consider at the earliest, the sanction and release of funds for two new ITIs in Meghalaya, proposal for which has already been submitted.
Lyngdoh, while speaking at the National Consultation Workshop on Industry Career Centre – ITI Collaboration held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on Friday, said that the two new ITIs are proposed to come up at Khliehriat and Mawkyrwat.
She said that there was a growing need to expand the network of ITIs in Meghalaya.
The day-long workshop was organized by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India with an aim to find ways to enhance employment and employability together with catalyzing entrepreneurship through career counseling and vocational training.
Pointing out that the Ministry of Labour will assist the states in developing at least one model ITI, Lyngdoh said that the state government has identified a government ITI at Tura for the purpose.
“Best efforts will be made by all stakeholders to ensure the success of the project,” she assured.
Earlier, the Meghalaya Labour Minister informed the gathering that “employment and employability delivery systems in the State are being improved through the setting up of Government ITIs and the implementation of innovative skill development programmes.”
Lyngdoh also underscored the need to provide suitable employment to the youth which, according to her, was a high priority agenda for the nation and can be achieved only by equipping the young with skills required to meet the demands of the market.
Stating that during the first two financial years of the 12th Five Year Plan Period, about 12245 youth have been provided training by the State Labour Department under various skill development programmes, Lyngdoh informed that following a long-felt need to replace the existing obsolete trades by demand driven ones in the ITIs, the Mechanic, Motor Vehicle Section of Government ITI, Shillong is being upgraded into a world class automobile section in collaboration with Tata Motors Limited and the same will be commissioned later this year.
