Assam Rifles seizes huge ammo in Nagaland

Kohima: Personnel of 33 Assam Rifles recovered ammunition and warlike stores from Namsa town of Mon district, official sources said on Monday. A release from the PRO of the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North) said that based on specific intelligence input the Assam Rifles launched a search operation on August 29 and searched the house of self-styled major Ngawang Konyak of NSCN(IM). During the search, a large cache of ammunition, warlike stores and incriminating documents of NSCN(IM) were recovered from the house. These were reportedly being used by the outfit to create fear among the local populace and coerce them into paying illegal taxes. The release said the operation had once again sent a strong message to the faction to restrict inimical activities, thereby maintaining peace and tranquility in the area and enforcing adherence to the Cease Fire Ground Rules. Nagaland JD (U) lauds Modi for PMJDY

Kohima: The Janata Dal (United) has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for launching the Prime Minister Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) scheme. At its executive meeting on August 30 the JD(U)’s state unit also discussed the Nagaland-Assam border issue. In a press release state chief Mhonjan Lotha said the JD(U) appreciated Mr Modi’s initiative of launching the ‘Mega Scheme’ PMJDY all over India to provide banking and credit facilities to the poor. The party appealed to the authorities, banking officials and Village Council or Colony Chairmen, Secretaries and Gaon Burhas to co-operate with the directives and ensure 100 per cent success of the NDA’s pro-poor initiative. With regard to the Ralan area border clash, the JD(U) appreciated the chief ministers and home ministers of both states for taking prompt measures by bringing the situation under control and agreeing to resolve the issues by forming a joint mechanism to monitor the situation until it arrives at mutual understanding based on ground realities between the land owners and tenants. The JD(U) further urged the state government to deploy adequate state, Indian Reserve Battalion and Nagaland Armed Police force to safeguard life and property of the affected villages till normalcy returns. Three under trials escape from police outpost lock-up

Itanagar: Three under trial prisoners escaped from Chongkham police outpost in Lohit district on Saturday night, the police today said. Three under trials escaped from the lock-up when they went to drink water from a hand pump located inside the outpost premises, in-charge of the outpost Thomas Pertin said. Water supply to the outpost was damaged, so the prisoners were allowed to use the hand pump, he said. The inmates disappeared taking advantage of the darkness, Pertin said adding at the time of the incident only a constable was guarding the prisoners. The escaped prisoners were Sahil Tirki, a murder accused and Bidhan Chakma and Chitisu Chakma, both accused in a kidnapping case. A massive combing operation has been launched jointly by the Police, IRBN and CRPF, while all exit points in the district have been sealed, Pertin said. In July last year, 18 under trials escaped from the same outpost after digging a hole in the wall. While four were arrested later, but other 14 are still at large. (PTI)

CBI grills Assam singer, ED summons TV channel boss

Kolkata:The CBI on Monday called singer-filmmaker Sadananda Gogoi to appear at its Salt Lake office for the fourth straight day of grilling for his link with jailed Saradha group chief Sudipta Sen. The singer from Assam has been questioned by the CBI for his alleged involvement in the Rs 20,000 crore ponzi scam since he arrived here from Guwahati on August 29. The interrogation began a day after his house was searched in Guwahati. The entertainer has been accused of working as a linkman between Sen and politicians and top police officials in Assam for spreading the business in the northeast. Meanwhile, another report said the Enforcement Directorate on Monday summoned former owner of the Tara Group of TV channel Ratikanta Basu regarding selling of the channel to Sudipta Sen. (UNI)

Video recording of Tatkal booking

Guwahati: In order to ensure that no touts take advantage of Tatkal booking facility by depriving genuine passengers, video recording of Tatkal booking at PRS Rangiya under Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has been started. The video recording facility has been started from August 25, an NFR release said here on Monday. A surprise check was also conducted by a team of senior Railway officers, led by the Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Rangiya, on August 23. During checking, all relevant documents required for issuing Tatkal tickets were checked of passengers who were standing in queue at the PRS counter. This was to ensure that no Tatkal ticket can be issued to a passenger without proper documents. Such drives will continue in other PRS counters also, the statement added. (UNI)

Life comes to standstill  due to protest of killing of two in Imphal

Imphal: All activities came to a halt in four hill districts of Manipur today as a mark of protest against killing of two persons at Ukhrul on Aug 30 last. All shops were closed down and roads deserted at Ukhrul, Tamenglong, Chandel and Senapati districts . Preparations were in full swing to carry out the last rites of the two persons who died in police firing at Ukhrul district. Troops of Assam Rifles patrolled at Ukhrul to maintain law and order. The last rites of Ramkashing and Mayopam who died in police firing will be held later today at Ukhrul after a mass prayer at Ukhrul district quarter. Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh has already announced ex gratia of Rs 5 lakhs for those killed and the government will bear the expenses of all those injured. All policemen who were held captive by the protestors at Ukhrul were released but so far arms and ammunitions seized from police were not returned yet. Naga Women’s Union (NWU) , All Tribal Students Union Manipur(ATSUM) , Indigenous Democratic Front (IDF) , Manipur Students Association, Delhi and other bodies have appealed for peace and a probe into the incident. The United Naga Council (UNC) is likely to announce a course of action after the performance of the last rites. UNI
