SHILLONG: The NEHU Executive Council has constituted a committee to look into the issue suspension of Prof AK Das, who had allegedly sexually assaulted a female research scholar recently.

The NEHU Executive Council in its meeting held on Wednesday appointed the committee since the suspension of Prof Das expires on September 8.

The committee will now look into the matter and decide the future course of action.

Acting Vice Chancellor P Shukla said that the meeting was called as the suspension of Prof Das expires after ninety days.

The single bench of the High Court of Meghalaya earlier had directed that the disciplinary proceedings of NEHU will be subject to the outcome of the writ petition filed by Prof Das.

Shukla, meanwhile, said that the NEHU would tell the court that NEHU women’s cell is the proper and competent authority to inquire into the matter and women cell would like to continue the inquiry. Das was put under suspension in June after the research scholar lodged a formal complaint with the University authorities. An inquiry committee was also set up subsequently to investigate the matter.
