Stress on education at MLCU’s Literacy Day programme

SHILLONG: Education is not just about passing in exams but we should learn from it and be able to utilize education in order to develop our lives and livelihood”.

This message was stressed upon by the faculty and students of the Department of Social Work of Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) during an awareness programme held on Monday in collaboration with the NSS unit of MLCU, as part of the World Literacy Day celebration in Lumsohpieng, Bhoi Rymbong, Ri Bhoi District.

The students and faculty of MLCU took part in the programme which also featured group discussions with the locals, street plays and other activities to promote the importance of literacy in the lives of the rural community.

The students of the 5th Semester presented a street play which they performed in the busy market area of Bhoi Rymbong while the crowd paid due attention to the message of importance of literacy.

Later in the day at a programme held on the premises of Grace Foundation School in Lumsohpieng, the Head of Department of Social Work, MLCU, Melari Nongrum, urged the local community to value education and to use the knowledge gained in schools and colleges so that their can better theirs’ and their family’s life.

“But one should not forget your roots and your humble beginnings even after you have become educated. You should instead strive to better your family’s farming or any other work with the help of your education,” said Nongrum.
