Motphran bridge demolition to begin on Saturday

SHILLONG: Almost synonymous with the city, the decades old Motphran bridge will cease to exist soon. The District Administration has informed that the demolition of the bridge will begin from 9 pm onwards on September 20. The Motphran bridge is being dismantled for it was declared unsafe for further use by technical experts.
Adressing pressmen on Wednesday, East Khasi Hills acting Deputy Commissioner Cyril V Diengdoh said, “The demolition of the bridge which will be carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD) is likely to be completed within a span of three to four days.” The department has been asked to be extra cautious while the demolition is being carried out.
The acting Deputy Commissioner assured that the PWD will adopt all the necessary safety measures to avoid any kind of untoward incident during the demolition process. Vehicles would be barred from entering Motphran during the demolition hours and there is a possibility of disruption of power supply while the exercise is being carried out.
“We have issued necessary directive to the MeECL and other authorities to ensure that minimal inconvenience is caused to the public,” he said.
The historic monument in Motphran, however, will be protected during the exercise, the acting DC informed.
Traffic arrangement
Meanwhile, the traffic department has informed that parking of vehicles would not be allowed in Motphran.
East Khasi Hills SP, M Kharkrang informed that entry of vehicles towards Motphran will be restricted from 7 pm onwards. “Vehicles coming from Jaiaw and heading towards Police Bazar will have to go via Raitsamthiah to Umsohsun road or from Wahingdoh, near the office of Syiem Mylliem, Mawkhar,” he informed.
He added that vehicles coming from Iew Mawlong will be allowed to go till Sohra stand from where they have to turn back while vehicles coming from Police Bazar will be allowed to head till Bimola Pharmacy.
Kharkrang also informed that the area from Khasi National Durbar Hall, Mawkhar to MUDA will be a no parking zone.
Similarly, parking of vehicles will not be allowed between Bimola point to Iew Mawlong.
