Army jawan injured in blast triggered by ULFA ultras

Guwahati: An Army jawans was injured when militants belonging to the outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) or ULFA(I) detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) under an Army truck on a road passing through two tea estates at Kherbari Tiniali near Sapekhati in Sonari sub-division of Assam’s Sivasagar district Friday morning.
Superintendent of Police (SP), Bijoygiri Kuligam said the Army jawan injured in the blast had been hospitalized at Army-base hospital in Dinjan. The Army truck was also damaged in the explosion. Initial reports said that three army jawans were injured in the blast.
The IED was detonated by a remote control as long wires were found in the area. A bag suspected to be containing explosives substances was also recovered from the spot.
Explosive experts were summoned to examine the contents of the bag.
Many tea bushes of the tea gardens on both sides of the road were burnt under the impact of the explosion.
Fugitive ‘commander-in-chief’ Paresh Baruah-led ULFA (I) in an email sent to the media here claimed responsibility for the blast and also claimed that seven Army personnel were injured in the blast, which was denied by the police.
Police and the Army personnel launched an operation in the area following the blast. The site of the blast is close to Assam’s boundary with Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
Governor asks Civil Aviation minister to restore daily service
Kohima: Nagaland Governor P B Acharya has urged Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju Pusapati to improve upon the air connectivity problem being faced by the state in the wake of reduction of Dimapur-Kolkata-New Delhi Air India service from seven days to five days a week. The Governor who met the minister in New Delhi on Thursday urged him to immediately restore the daily service of Air India linking Dimapur, Kolkata and New Delhi and to provide helicopter services from Dimapur to Kohima, a press release issued here said. The minister said he would do his best especially keeping in mind the upcoming Hornbill Festival in the state. The minister informed the governor that he would speak to DoNER Minister to provide the necessary viability gap to cover the loss of Air India to operate in the Dimapur-Kolkata sector, the release said. Church council appeals to EC to defer the date of counting
Kohima: The Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) has appealed to the Election Commission to defer the date for counting of votes for the October 15 by-election to Northern Angami-II assembly constituency in the state. The counting of votes is scheduled for October 19, which is a Sunday and therefore a day of worship for Christians, NBCC general secretary Rev L Anjo Keikung stated in a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner. Nagaland has a predominantly Christian population and any important official proceedings such as counting of votes held on a Sunday will disturb the worshipers and go against the religious sentiment of Christians in the state, he added. Tripura govt clears proposal for denotifying forest land
Agartala: Tripura government has cleared the proposal for denotifying a 12.4 km stretch of land inside Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary, removing a major obstacle for railway extension work in the state. The move comes after receiving the approval of the Ministry of Environment and Forests for the same. State Forest Minister Naresh Jamataia told reporters that the Ministry of Environment and Forests has cleared the plea of denotifying 12.4 km of forest land area in Trishna wildlife sanctuary in South Tripura district following a request from the state government to push railway extension work from Udaipur to Sabroom. “Based on the approval of MoEF, the Cabinet has cleared the proposal for denotifying the plots in its last sitting removing a major obstacle for the railway extension work upto Sabroom”, he said. The 70 km railway extension work from Udaipur to Sabroom is scheduled to be completed by 2018 while 44 km extension work from Agartala to Udaipur is scheduled to be completed by March 2016. The entire 70-km stretch would be constructed in broad-gauge format. Northeast Frontier Railway General Manager (Construction) Rajesh Kumar Singh met Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Transport Minister Manik Dey recently to brief them about the railway extension plan in Tripura. Arunachal seeks central fund to restore road connectivity
Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh has urged the Centre to immediately release fund for restoring the road connectivity severely damaged by recent floods in the state. Arunachal PWD Minister Gojen Gadi made the requests in New Delhi on Thursday to Union Minister for State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju who has been appointed in-charge of north eastern region by Union Road, Transport & Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari for his ministry, Gadi said in a statement here today. Pointing out the trail of devastation and damages caused by the flood to various important roads, particularly Itanagar-Banderdewa, Mahadevpur-Boding-Jairampur, Longding-Tisa-Khonsa, Khonsa-Changlang, Pasighat-Pangin, Pasighat-Mariyang-Yingkiong, Gadi had informed Rijiju that the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) amounting to Rs 28.81 crore were already submitted to the ministry. Rijiju had assured to meet Gadkari immediately on his return from Mumbai along with Gadi for finalisation of the proposals. Gadi would also seek the support of union ministers for all road projects of the state, including the ambitious Itanagar-Hollongi four-lane project, and also plead for increasing the relief under national calamity fund considering the excessive damages caused to roads, buildings among others.
