Police rescue minor

SHILLONG: The police on Friday rescued a minor girl who was allegedly beaten up and made to work in a grocery store at Motinagar by one Risuklang Lyngdoh and Ferdinand Mawthoh. The matter was brought to light by the CSWO whose members also accompanied the cops during the raid.

In an FIR lodged at the Laitumkhrah police station, the CSWO alleged that the minor girl was beaten and made to starve even as her ears were cut and lips burnt with candles by Mawthoh.

CSWO president, Agnes Kharshiing said that the minor has been staying with the family, which has been abusing her, for quite some time.

When asked about her age, the girl confirmed that she was 14 years old.

This, Kharshiing said, seems to be the new ploy of “the exploiters who cheat these children and tell them that they are 14 years old as the child labour inspector would not act against those employing children above that age.”

The CSWO president also alleged that the girl was denied food on Friday.

The victim has been taken to an “overcrowded” Government shelter home at New Colony where as many as 15 inmates reside in a single room and two children share the same bed.

The CSWO further added that the living conditions of the shelter home violate the rights of the children.
