Incheon:Day Five at the 17th Asian Games started with rower Dushyant Singh adding a bronze to India’s kitty in lightweight men’s single sculls final A here on wednesday.
Dushyant completed the 2,000 metre race in seven minutes and 26.57 seconds to finish third behind gold medal winner Hoi Kwan Lok of Hong Kong and South Korea’s Hakbeom Lee.
Dushyant, who was at the second spot for a considerable period of time, was overtaken by China’s Lok Kwan Hoi just after the 1,000m mark to clinch the yellow metal and Korea’s Lee Hakbeom made a late surge to take silver.
With the addition of just one bronze on wednesday, India took their tally to 12 (1 gold, 1 silver, 10 bronze). Powerhouse China continued to lead the pack with 99 medals (50-25-24) followed by hosts South Korea with 70 medals (24-23-23) and Japan (64 = 18-23-23).
In Women’s Pair Final, Indian rowers Sanjukta Dung Dung and Tarunikha Pratap finished 5th.
In hockey, while the men’s team will take on arch-rivals Pakistan tomorrow, the women’s team lost to China 1-2. The eves, now in second position, will have to beat Malaysia in a must-win game to reach the semi-finals.
After starting the tournament with a victory against Thailand 3-0 in the first match, the Indian eves lost their second match against China.
Liang Meiyu and Zhao Yudiao scored a goal each for China, while Jaspreet Kaur scored the lone goal for India.
In squash, the women stars conquered arch-rivals Pakistan 3-0 in the team event.
Dipika Pallikal beat Wazir Maria in the first match of Women’s Team Group B.
Joshana Chinappa beat Ashraf Moqaddas to give India a 2-0 lead.
Balamurukan Aparajitha beat Khan Riffat 11-3, 11-3, 11-3 to seal the match in India’s favour. The men were not left behind as Kush Kumar sealed the match against China beating Tianxia Yang in straight games 11-7, 11-1, 11-1 in mere 16 minutes.
Earlier, in Match 1, Mahesh Mangaonkar defeated Junjie of China 11-2, 11-7, 9-11, 11-2. In the second match, Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu defeated Jiaqi Shen in straight games 11-4, 11-9, 11-5. The Indians blanked China 3-0 with a straight set win.(uni)
