SHILLONG: The Movement for Indigenous Peoples Rights and Livelihood -Meghalaya (MIPRL-M) has demanded a Judicial Enquiry into the unprovoked firing by police at Wapung village in East Jaintia Hills which led to the death of two people.

“We demand stringent action against those responsible for this tragic incident,” MIPRL-M

vice chairman Erwin K Sutnga said in a statement on Wednesday.

Sutnga blamed the arrogant attitude and highhandedness of Assistant SP K. Kathikeyan, and blamed him for the resultant violence and deterioration of the situation.

The act of unprovoked firing by the police on an unarmed crowd who had come out to go to Lad Rymbai Thana because of the arrest of some person is to be condemned since this has resulted in the death of two persons and injury to many innocent people including a 13-year-old boy, Sutnga said.

“It has also been learnt that other crowd control measures like order to disperse, tear gas and lathi charge were not used,” he said.
