Constable shot dead, another injured in attack in Outer Delhi
New Delhi: In second such attack within three days, a Delhi Police constable was killed while another was seriously injured when some persons opened fire on the police men who had confronted them on finding their activities suspicious in the wee hours in Outer Delhi’s Vijay Vihar. Constable Jagbir died on the spot while his colleague Narendra was critically injured in the incident and is battling for life at a city hospital, police said. “The incident occurred at around 2 AM on Monday when the two constables were on night patrol on their bike and found some persons sitting in an auto in L block, gali no.7,” said a police official. The policemen found their activities suspicious and questioned them. When they could not come up up with satisfactory answers, the two constables left their bike and sat in the auto to take them to nearby Vijay Vihar police station, he said. The suspects, who were around three to four in number, then opened fire on both the constables from close range and fled, police said. Jagbir died on the spot while the other constable, who sustained bullet injury in his back, was rushed to a nearby hospital where his condition is said to be serious, he said. Senior officials reached the spot immediately and Crime Branch and Special Cell have also been roped in to probe the case, police said. The attackers seemed seasoned criminals as they even took away the policemen’s arms with them, police said. On Saturday night, three men had opened fire on two constables in Connaught Place area. No one was injured in the incident and one of the attackers was arrested.(PTI)
Gowda, Yadav back Charan Singh memorial demand
Meerut:The Centre’s decision reportedly to reject the proposal for a memorial to former prime minister the late Chaudhary Charan Singh was an insult to all the farmers in the country, JD(S) leader HD Deve Gowda said here today. Speaking at a rally organised by the Chaudhary Charan Singh Memorial Committee, former prime minister Deve Gowda told the gathering that they would have to collectively put pressure on the government to allow the building of the memorial at 12, Tughlaq Road in New Delhi. Other speakers at the event, among whom were JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav and former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, also raised a demand for the Bharat Ratna to be posthumously conferred on Singh. Charan Singh’s son and Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh, too, attended the event. 12, Tughlaq Road had been the residence of former Union aviation minister Ajit Singh. He was fined for overstaying in the type-VIII bungalow after failing to win a parliamentary seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.(PTI)
RTI activist fears threat in Bihar
Patna: An RTI activist from Bihar says he faces threats to life after exposing people who are claiming pension meant for freedom fighters though they took no part in the independence struggle.Manohar Mishra, who is in his early 30s, said the racketers had threatened to kill him and his family members and that his terrorized aged parents were spending sleepless nights.Mishra, who spoke to IANS on telephone from Kolkata, has urged Home Minister Rajnath Singh to provide him and his family protection.”After I exposed the fake freedom fighters, the freedom fighter mafia is after me,” Mishra said.”I am afraid they can harm me physically or can trap me in some fake cases,” he said.In a letter to Rajnath Singh, he has demanded a high-level probe over the non-availability of records in respect of the Swatantra Senani Samman Pension scheme.Mishra said he had requested the departments concerned through RTI to provide a complete list of freedom fighters drawing pension in Bihar.He said he was informed that there were no such records with the Bihar government.(IANS)
48 checkposts set up at Haryana-UP border for the election
Muzaffarnagar:To ensure free and fair elections, 48 checkposts have being set up at the Haryana-UP border for the elections to be held on October 15. According to the directives issued by election commission, checkposts have been set up in six bordering districts for the assembly elections to be held in Haryana and the bypoll to be held in Kairana assembly seat on Oct 15, Subdivisional Magistrate and Returning Officer Kairana Suresh Kumar Mishra said. The checkposts started functioning today in Shamli, Saharanpur, Baghpat, Gautam Budhnagar, Mathura and Aligarh and will be in place till Oct 15, he added. Meanwhile, four checkposts were established at Haryana border in Shamli district including two at Yamuna bridge at Kairana, one on Panipat-Khatima highway and another at Bidoli-Yamuna bridge on the highway. Mishra said in total 16 checkposts have been established in the inter-district border at Baghpat, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur and Shamli district.(PTI)
23 booked for illegal sand mining
Muzaffarnagar:A case was registered against 23 persons for illegal sand mining here in a drive against the sand mafia, police said on Monday. On Sunday, police received a tip-off that illegal sand mining was taking place at Ganga canal. But when they rushed to the spot, the miners managed to escape. A tractor loaded with sand was seized, police said. A case was registered against 23 sand miners at Nagla Bajurg village under Bhopa police station here last evening. Ganga canal has been closed from October 3 to October 23 for maintenance work by the irrigation department, they added.(PTI)
