Proceeds from auction of paintings to go to CM’s Relief Fund
SHILLONG: ‘Peace and Nature’ an art and culture exhibition in aid of the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for flood victims got underway at the Aurobindo Institute of Art and Culture here on Monday.
Around 32 paintings by artists from within the State and other parts of the country will be on display during the four-day exhibition which will conclude with the auction of the paintings on Thursday.
A sizeable portion from the proceeds of the auction will go to the CM’s Relief Fund.
The exhibition is being organized by Jharkhand-based Utsriji in collaboration with city-based Riti Academy of Visual Arts. The event is supported by Department of Art and Culture and a host of other sponsors.
Deputy Chief Minister, Rowell Lyngdoh, who inaugurated the exhibition, appealed to people to participate in the event which is being organised for the noble mission of assisting flood victims in the State.
Home Minister Roshan Warjri, Chairperson of Meghalaya Resource and Employment Generation Council Dikkanchi Shira, DGP P.J.P. Hanaman and Director of Arts and Culture, Matsiewdor War Nongbri and a host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
Eight out of the 32 paintings on display are creations of local artists.
Taking part in the exhibition are artists like Shuvendu Mondol and Srikanta Das. While Mondol is a graduate in Fine Arts from Rabindrabharti University and has attended workshops under Prof. Remo (sculptor) from Paris, Alexander Tocarve from Russia and Shahabuddin from Bangladesh, Das is the winner of Orissa Lalit Kala Academy Award.
Both the Deputy Chief Minister and the Home Minister observed that the event will act as a perfect platform for budding artists of the State to showcase their works. The exhibition also provides the local artists and opportunity to interact and learn from their more experienced counterparts from across the country.
The dignitaries also observed that though music and sports have begun to get their share of exposure in the State, art forms like painting and sculpting are yet to make a mark. Hence, the event has come as a blessing of sorts for the art lovers and artists alike.
