KHADC faces cash crunch

SHILLONG: The KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum will approach the State Government over the pending Bills even as he has decided to raise the issue of financial constrain the Council is facing at present before the Chief Minister.

“I shall soon be meeting the DCA Minister HDR Lyngdoh to discuss the Bills, which are awaiting clearance,” Nongrum said after a meeting of the Executive Committee (EC) here on Wednesday.

“We need to know the status of these important Bills. We have passed these Bills for their execution only,” the KHADC CEM said.

Referring to pathetic financial position of the Council, he said that he would meet Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma in this connection.

“The council is facing a serious financial crunch. There has also been leakage of revenue of the council. We are yet to find out who are responsible for these leakages,” Nongrum said.

The KHADC CEM said that the new EC has also resolved to follow the policy adopted by the former EC led by Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit proposing to convert the entire Sweeper’s Lane area into a market complex.

Last month, Basaiawmoit hours before he quit the top council’s post had conducted a survey to the Sweeper Lane while demanding the government to ‘relocate’ the harijans residing in the area, at Them Iew Mawlong to create a new market complex.

“In taking forward the policy of the old EC, we have decided to also meet the Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh to suggest on the need to create a multi complex in the area,” the CEM.

The area also falls under constituency (Jaiaw) of the CEM. The Sweeper Lane is considered as a vote bank during election time.

“I will not put the election before me because for me the interest and welfare of the indigenous people and their land is of utmost importance,” Nongrum said.

Stating that the area has been misused as vote bank by politicians, he further said, “As far as I am concerned, I want to do what is right.”

The winter session of the Council will commence from October 28.
