Move to cancel license of cyber cafés flouting rules

SHILLONG: The State Police had issued a set of norms way back in 2011 to put a check on cyber crimes. But majority of the cyber café owners in the city are still not following the guidelines.
Speaking to reporters on the matter, East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang said that the Police will take up the matter with the Deputy Commissioner to cancel the license of those cyber café owners flouting the rules.
Within this week, the SP will also get a report from all the respective police stations about the number of cyber cafés “flouting the rules”.
According to the police directive, cyber café owners are supposed to seek identification proof from every user besides making note of the details of the users on a daily basis. Besides this, the State Government had also directed cyber café owners to install CCTV cameras.
But three years down the line, it is evident that many of the cyber café owners in the State capital are least bothered about the concerned directives.
Visit to some cyber cafés revealed that many of the owners did not bother to ask for identification or address proofs from the customers. Besides, majority of the cyber cafés were yet to install CCTV cameras.
