Five arrested in Bengal for Birbhum violence

Kolkata:Five people were arrested and 10 others detained Wednesday in connection with a political clash in West Bengal that left three people dead, police said. The clash, allegedly between activists of the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), took place in Birbhum district’s Makra village Monday. Indiscriminate firing by miscreants left three dead and over a dozen injured. “In pursuance of the first information reports filed by the victims’ families, we have arrested five people and detained 10 others for questioning,” additional superintendent of police (Birbhum) Ananda Roy said. “We are looking for more people involved in the clash,” Roy said. The BJP, which demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the incident, sent a delegation to the village to assess the situation. Alleging that police had remained “inactive” following a directive from the seat of power “Nabanna”, state BJP president Rahul Sinha has demanded a CBI probe. The party has also moved the Calcutta High Court on the issue.(IANS)

Five dead in mishap

Munger:Four persons, including a child, were on Wednesday killed when the motorcycle they were riding on collided with a tractor here while a girl, who witnessed the accident, died of heart attack, police said. The incident took place at Bel Bihma village of the district, when the motorcycle collided with a speeding tractor while trying to avoid a stray dog, Munger Superintendent of Police Varun Kumar Sinha said. The villagers were first to reach the spot but the riders were dead by then, he said. The deceased, who are in the age group of 25 to 40 years, have been identified as Ganesh Manjhi, Pradeep Manjhi and Arun Manjhi. The child killed in the accident was identified as Pintu (6). All of them belonged to one family and were residents of Tarapur, police said. (PTI)

CBI court summons Dayanidhi Maran in Aircel-Marxis deal

New Delhi: Former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran has been summoned by a special court hearing Aircel-Marxis deal, as part of the larger 2G spectrum allocation case, to appear before it March 2. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Court Judge O.P. Saini, after taking cognizance of the charges framed in the case, also summoned Maran’s brother Kalanithi, and Malaysian businessman T. Ananda Krishnan, among others, as co-accused in the case. The agency has alleged that Dayanidhi Maran used his influence to help Krishnan to buy Aircel by coercing its owner Sivasankaran to part with his stake.(IANS)

Techie held for trying to join ISIS

Hyderabad:A 30-year-old former Google employee, who was allegedly plotting to join the Islamic State (ISIS) ranks in Iraq, has been detained by Hyderabad Police.Software engineer Munawad Salman, hailing from Tamil Nadu, got attracted to jihadist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) through social media networks and had planned to join its forces, a senior police officer said on Wednesday. Salman, who had worked at the Hyderabad office of technology giant Google before quitting his job around seven months back, was picked up yesterday following inputs that he was making efforts to procure a visa to Saudi Arabia from where he allegedly planned to flee to Iraq, he said. He reportedly studied posts of the ISIS and their propaganda on the internet and social media platforms for past six months and had planned to join the group’s fighters in Iraq.(PTI)

Man stabbed to death in attack

Meerut:A 25-year-old man was stabbed to death and another injured in an attack following a quarrel between two children, police said on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Ran Singh (25) and the injured, his brother Brahm Singh (30), residents of Shankar Nagar colony who were attacked by some youths in Partapur area yesterday, police spokesperson said. The trouble started when an 8-year-old girl from the deceased’s family was slapped by a boy, police spokesperson said. The girl’s uncle then scolded the boy at which his family members took umbrage following which last night some youths attacked Ran and his brother with knives. Ran died on the spot and his body was sent for postmortem, police said, adding the injured has been admitted into a hospital. Police said five people have been arrested in the case. (PTI)

Youth strangulates to death teen brother

Thane:An 18-year-old boy was strangulated to death allegedly by his elder brother here over a minor dispute, police said on wednesday. The incident took place last night in Pagdha of Bhiwandi taluka here when the two brothers–Vilas Waghe and Raju Waghe– got into an altercation over a petty money matter in the house, PI J M Bhosale of Padgha police station told PTI. The matter took an ugly turn when the elder brother Vilas (22) lost his temper and hit Raju and then strangulated him, killing him on the spot. Police have registered a case under sections 302 (murder), 323 (Voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace)of the IPC against Vilas on a complaint made by his mother Surekha Waghe. The body has been sent for postmortem. Vilas is absconding since the incident and no arrest has been made so far, police added. (PTI)

600 Karnataka doctors resume duty after quitting in protest

Bangalore:About 2,600 doctors including specialists, working in state-run hospitals across Karnataka, resumed duty Tuesday a day after they resigned in protest over the state government’s failure to fulfill their demands, including of wage disparity. “All striking doctors are back on duty as we do not want patients to suffer from want of treatment. We will not take back our resignations till the government meets our major demands,” Karnataka State Government Medical Officers’ Association president T.A. Veerabhadraiah told IANS here. The doctors reported to duty after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah agreed to meet their representatives Wednesday here to discuss the demands as he also holds the finance portfolio. (IANS)
