SHILLONG: Over 20 members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances and Law headed by Rajya Sabha member from Tamil Nadu, Dr. E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan, arrived in Shillong on Friday.
The Committee will hear the grievances of people arising out of the NGT ban on coal mining and will also hold discussions on other pertinent issues on Saturday.
Memo submitted: The Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya on Friday submitted a memorandum to the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the restoration of the rights of the Khasi Chiefs.
A copy of the memorandum was also forwarded to Lok Sabha member from Shillong, Vincent H. Pala. In the memorandum, Chairman of the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya, John F. Kharshiing, said that there was a need on the part of the Centre to respect the ‘National Solemn Commitment’ entered into by the Government of India and the Khasi states as far as constitutional recognition to the traditional bodies are concerned.
Kharshiing, while seeking the intervention of the Parliamentary Committee also highlighted that the matter was taken up by the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Human Rights Commission.
