SHILLONG: Former Sohra legislator P.W. Khongjee has said that the ban on coal mining has badly affected the livelihood of people in Sohra.

“The people of the areas are facing tremendous hardship to cope with the issue of earning their daily bread, besides maintaining the school and college expenditures of their children,” Khongjee said.

He also revealed that 30 employees in the rank of officers and 373 general employees of MCCL, who are covered under the wage board, have not been paid their salaries for the past four months.

He also informed that they had impressed upon the Chief Minister to speed up MCCL modernization.

“At present, the cement factor is producing 200 metric tonnes of cement in a single day. With the introduction of dry process under the modernization project, the factory is expected to produce a total of 600 metric tonnes of cement in a day,” the former legislator said, while informing that the Chief Minister had assured that the dry process of production would be made operational within March next year.

Sohra Youth Congress president, Khraw K. Kharkongor, urged upon the State Government to release the pending salaries at the earliest to provide relief to the MCCL staff and their family members.
