Guwahati:Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday said the BJP is being “Congressised” and leaning on the Congress’ iconic figures in the absence of its own leaders. After projecting Sardar Vallavbhai Patel as its icon, the BJP is now in the process of displaying Mahatma Gandhi as its icon, Mr Gogoi maintained.
Addressing a news conference here, he said, “They (BJP) don’t have icons. First they tried to project Sardar Patel as their icon, and now they want to project Gandhiji.” “The BJP is now embracing Khadi use, while it has been a long custom with Congress workers to wear and promote khadi,” he said. He charged the BJP with trying to turn India into a “Hindu Rashtra” while claiming to be inspired by Gandhiji, who promoted secularism.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is drawing inspiration from Gandhiji only now. I have been following his ideals since my school days,” Mr Gogoi added.
He also accused the Modi government of leaning on slogans to promote their image before the people. “Mr Modi’s government doesn’t speak of “aache din” anymore. They are coming up with new slogans to attract people rather than delivering on earlier promises,” Mr Gogoi said.
He further accused the BJP-led NDA government of doing a U-turn on all its major poll promises, including the promise of bringing back black money from foreign banks within 100 days.(UNI)
