SHLLLONG: With lack of enforcement, the order of NGT prohibiting coal mining and transportation has become redundant in State.

Hundreds of trucks are plying carrying coal from East and West Jaintia Hills districts with impunity. Neither the police, nor magistrates are posted to check and enforce the NGT ban.

Sources alleged that though the trucks carrying coal are seized, there are instances where the seized truckers are allowed to go after paying a fine.

According to informed sources, in East and West Jaintia Hills districts, coal mining has been rampant and neither the Labour department, nor the Mining and Geology department or the Forest and Environment department has shown any will to stop this illegal activity. Moreover, Police are helpless in this situation.

While huge amount of money is collected before allowing the coal carrying trucks to pass through Jaintia Hills, the delay on the part of the Government to regulate the transportation of coal based on the guidelines of NGT appointed committee has resulted in huge loss of revenue.

There is no checking of trucks at check gates including that of taxation department and DMR on National High way since those who man the check gates can’t officially collect taxes or royalty from these trucks as it becomes illegal which results in Government incurring double loss.
