SHILLONG: In an alleged case of revenge by those who supported an accused in a rape case, the house of a rape victims’ sister was torched in a village in Sohra.

The house belonging to one Rita Massar of Diengsiar village, Sohra, was burnt down on Tuesday afternoon.

Police maintained that unknown miscreants torched the house of Rita Massar at around 12 noon. As a result, the house was completely gutted. The loss of property is estimated at around Rs.2 lakh.

However, in the FIR lodged by CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing, it was alleged that the incident was a result of instigation of some leaders of the local Dorbar including the persons identified as B. Mawkon and L. Dkhar.

The FIR also alleged that the incident was in retaliation to the arrest of one C. Mawkon who had allegedly raped Rita Massar’s sister on October 2.

The FIR further made an accusation that the brother of the rape accused had also threatened to shoot the brother of the victim after the arrest of the culprit.

Earlier, T. Buphang, the husband of Rita Massar, had filed a complaint with the village authorities that on November 8 night B. Mawkon and L. Dkhar had allegedly pelted stones at their house.

Subsequently the Dorbar called a meeting on November 11, but the villagers refused to accept Buphang as a member of the village.

Hence, police intervention was sought against the accused as the matter involved the alleged rape of a woman and destruction to the house, the FIR stated.
