Dissidence is under control, says Shillong MP

SHILLONG: Shillong MP, Vincent Pala has claimed that disgruntlement among Congress legislators over the style of functioning of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is under control after the recent visit of AICC General Secretary in-charge Meghalaya V Narayanasamy

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Pala said, “Everything is fine as long as MPCC president DD Lapang and Chief Minister Mukul Sangma are hand-in hand.”

To a query, on whether the issue of dissidence has been solved, Pala said, “The problem has been brought under control. In a big family like Congress, these type of issues are bound to surface, but things are always sorted out”.

According to Pala, during their recent visit the AICC leaders addressed the issue of dissidence. They stressed on the need to have unity within the party, he said.

Pala said that the legislators did not demand change in leadership.

“When some legislators met me in Delhi in the past, they did not mention anything specifically about the demand for change in leadership. What they wanted was that the Chief Minister should change his style of functioning,” Pala said.

He added that most of the legislators appreciated the Chief Minister for his intelligent way of doing things, though the only concern was his style of functioning, “but now Mukul has changed his attitude”.

The Shillong MP further said that when he asked for a response from the MPCC president DD Lapang in New Delhi recently, the latter had said “Dr Mukul is alright now since he has adjusted himself.”

It was in August that Lapang along with some Congress legislators met AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi to apprise them about growing disgruntlement among Congress legislators over the style of functioning of the Chief Minister.

Later, former Chief Minister SC Marak also met Sonia Gandhi along with Lapang to discuss the political situation in the State.
