SHILLONG: A cleaning drive of the Umshyrpi River was carried out on Saturday in a joint initiative by the Shillong Cantonment Board and Station Cell, HQ 101 Area.
The cleaning drive was organised a part of an effort to restore the former glory of the once pristine and breathtaking water body.
The PCB, CEO and staff of the Shillong Cantonment Board in collaboration with personnel from Station Cell, HQ 101 Area, F Composite Signal Regiment, Military Hospital, Shillong Municipal Board, along with the Dorbar Shnong and the public of Oxford, Kench’s Trace and Rilbong participated in the cleaning drive.
Members of the Lion’s Club, Shillong and prominent personalities including president of ICARE Foundation, Toki Blah and Editor, The Shillong Times, Patricia Mukhim, participated in the cleaning drive which started at 7:30am and continued till noon.
Station Commander Brig. Navjot Singh said that cleaning of the river should be a sustained effort and can be achieved only by changing peoples’ mindset.
