SHILLONG: After a four- year-long wait, families of four Langpih villagers who were killed in police firing on May 14, 2010 on Tuesday received Rs 2 lakh each provided by the Assam Government as compensation, even as they demanded action against the erring police personnel.

Recently, the Assam Government released Rs 8 lakh as compensation to the four widows (Rs 2 lakh each) of the deceased.

The Assam government had deposited the amount with the registry of High Court of Meghalaya.

The Meghalaya High Court in its order on January 31 had directed the Assam govt to pay compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the four families within a period of three months, which expired in July 21.

The Justice (retd) PC Phukan Judicial Inquiry Commission, which probed the Langpih incident, had held Assam Police personnel guilty for the firing incident which resulted in the death of four villagers – Charles Lyngkhoi, Denis Nongsiej, Ekros Rani and Columbos Hoojon.

Earlier, the Meghalaya Government had paid Rs 3 lakh each to the four families.

The four widows accompanied by their lawyer H.L Shangreiso and local legislator KP Pangniang were present in the court on Tuesday.

“We are not happy for the compensation but we will be more happy when the government will initiate action against the erring police personnel,” Pangniang said.
