JOWAI: Frequent power shutdowns in East and West Jaintia Hills during the evening hours have left parents, students and NGOs worried and irritated.

“Our children are preparing for their final examination and if there is no power supply it would be very difficult for them to study,” said B. Dkhar, a resident of Ladrymbai.

Several villages beside Jowai town have been spending time in darkness with some villages not getting any electricity for the last three months.

Dong Lum Trom – a locality in Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills District has been without power for the last three months due to the malfunction of a transformer installed for the locality.

The MeECL office at Khliehriat had assured of installing a new transformer but till date the same has not materialized.

Interestingly, electricity bills were being served to the consumers of the locality despite the fact that the village has been without power for three months. Pressure groups including the Hynniewtrep Youth Council and the Jaintia Youth Federation have met MeECL officials and requested them to provide regular and undisturbed power supply in East and West Jaintia Hills.
