SHILLONG: The number of militants who have surrendered in Meghalaya exceeds the figure in Chhattisgarh, State DGP P.J.P. Hanaman said.
Speaking over phone from Guwahati on Sunday, Hanaman who attended the conference of DGPs on internal security said that though there is spurt in militancy in Garo Hills, the success rate of the police is visible if one goes by the number of militants who have surrendered.
“Our forces have done tremendous work. As per data, the number of militants who have surrendered in Meghalaya is more than those who have surrendered in Chhattisgarh,” Hanaman said.
The two-day meeting of the state DGPs was addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Hanaman said that Meghalaya will continue to focus on both area domination and result oriented intelligence based operations to tackle militants especially GNLA in Garo Hills.
By area domination, the comfort zone of the militants is checked and the operation supported by intelligence inputs will help to check various militant activities.
According to the DGP, the strategy is same for the militants who are part of left wing extremism or those groups in the Northeast though their ideologies may differ.
On the first day of the session on internal security on Saturday, the central intelligence agencies expressed concern over the violent activities of GNLA in Garo Hills.
