GHADC polls likely in Feb

SHILLONG: The State Government is contemplating to hold the election to the GHADC in the second week of February.

Indicating this here on Wednesday, the District Council Affairs Minister HDR Lyngdoh said, “We will complete the election process by February 17 as the present term of the council ends on the same day”. He said the department is working on the date which will be announced in the due course of time

According to Lyngdoh, the Government had delayed the holding of the election since it was expecting an increase in the number of seats.

“Now, we will hold elections in all the existing 29 seats,” he said.

He also assured that all precautions would be taken to ensure a free and fair election.

Earlier, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had said that the State Government would go ahead with conduct of the election in the GHADC pending the amendment of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution for increasing of the number seats in the Council as indicated in the Agreed Text For Settlement (ATS) which was signed with the ANVC and ANVC-B.
