No unauthorised bus can carry children to school from Apr
Guwahati:Come April one, children in Kamrup Metro district including Guwahati will have to travel to their school only in buses provided by or approved by their schools, and not by any unauthorised hired vehicle.This decision was taken at a meeting here on Friday between the Kamrup Metro district Deputy Commissioner and the regional transport authority, said a district administration press release. The children would be allowed to travel only in their own school buses or those buses approved by the school authorities. Several other decisions were also taken for the safety and security of the children travelling in school buses. Each bus can have a maximum of 35 seats and the school authorities have to fix Global Positioning System (GPS) in their buses to know their locations and timings, the release said. While buses plying in unsafe condition would not be permitted to transport children, school buses will have to acquire a no objection certificate from the regional transport authority from now on, the meeting headed by DC Dr M Angamathu decided.(PTI)
3 killed, 25 injured in road mishaps in Assam
Nalbari:At least three persons, including a three-month old baby, were killed and 25 others injured in separate accidents in Nalbari district. According to police officials, the baby died on spot after the vehicle in which over 20 self-help group members, mostly women, were travelling collided head-on with a dumper near Suradi village on National Highway 31 this morning. The other passengers suffeed injuries and are being treated at hospital now. The group from Bhella in Barpeta district was returning after attending a training at Nalbari SIRD office. In another accident a 50-year old woman Jaitun Bibi was killed at Balizar village when a speeding car knocked her down, police said. In the third road mishap, a youth Ajit Das was killed on the spot after two motorcycles collided head on at Arikuchi village on Hajo-Nalbari road.Three other youths were injured, police said. (PTI)
Tension prevails after school girl’s death
Rangiya (Assam): A girl, found critically injured inside her school premises, died on way to hospital on Thursday, triggering tension in Assam’s Kamrup (Rural) district, police said. The girl, studying in Class 12 of Udayan Santiniketan School in Bezera, was found with serious injuries inside the school premises by the night guard last evening, a police official said. The guard first took the girl to the local primary health centre but she was referred to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital on Thursday and died on the way. Alleging that she was raped resulting in her death, local people gheraoed the Baihat Chariali police station demanding immediate arrest of the culprits and an inquiry into the incident. The police have picked up school principal Hemen Sarma, a youth Kangkan Deka, in whose house the girl lived on rent, and the night guard Bhagirath Deka for interrogation. Senior police and civil officials were camping in the area. (PTI)
One NLCT cadre arrested
Itanagar:One-self styled deputy commandant of National Liberation Council of Taniland (NLCT) was arrested along with arms and ammunition from Likabali under West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday. Identified as Duyum Taipodia (23) of Kamcham village, the self styled NLCT activist was involved in a kidnapping for ransom incident, district police sources here said here on Friday. Acting on information, a joint team comprising police and military intelligence under the supervision of district SP raided the village and arrested the accused from his residence.Police also recovered two 7.65 pistols with ammunition and one mobile phone from the arrested person, sources added. ‘More responsibilities for excise deptt officers with new law’
Aizawl:Mizoram Excise and Narcotics minister R Lalzirliana on Friday said officials of the department will be having more responsibilities when the newly-legislated Mizoram Liquor Prohibition and Control (MLPC) Act, 2014 comes in force in the state. Addressing the general conference of the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Service Association (MENSA) here, Lalzirliana said the Mizoram Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1995, in force in the state for 17 years did more harm than good, prompting the government to initiate a new liquor law. He said people consuming liquor would have access to quality liquor and to a large extent prevent consumption of spurious liquor after the new Act comes in force. Lalzirliana had earlier said the new liquor law would be implemented during the current fiscal. (PTI)
