SHILLONG: Questioning the efficacy and the high pricing of the High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) in Meghalaya, the All Drivers’ Association of Meghalaya (ADAM) has asked the State Government to cancel the agreement with Shimnit Utsch India Pvt. Ltd. and invite fresh tender for issue of HSRPs.

The ADAM stated that the rate for getting HSRP in neighbouring Assam is only Rs.119 for two wheelers, Rs.153 for three wheelers, Rs.318 for light motor vehicles and Rs.335 for medium and heavy vehicles while in Meghalaya people have to shell out a whopping amount of Rs.1905 for all types of vehicles.

The State neither has GPS oriented tracking system nor any national data of motor vehicles, the ADAM said, adding that even though it has been eight years since HSRP was implemented in Meghalaya vehicles continue to be stolen in the State.

ADAM also called for mandatory implementation of HSRP in Meghalaya at a more reasonable rate and asked the Government to stop the company from indirectly extorting money from the public in the name of security for vehicles
