Imphal: The 75th Nupi Lan (Women’s War) Day was observed on Friday in Manipur and other parts of the country and neighbouring countries to pay tribute to the women of Manipur who launched two major movements which are referred to Women’s war.
Women of Manipur launched historic wars during 1904 and 1939 against the Britishers.
A function was held at Nupi Lan Memorial Complex where a memorial has been constructed. Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh led the people of the state in offering tributes to the brave mothers who fought against the colonial regime.
The Chief Minister said we should follow the footsteps of the brave mothers who fought against injustice perpetrated by the British Empire and Manipur Kings.
Due to the major movements launched by women the then government was compelled to stop illegal export of rice by Marwari traders during famine and force labour.
Women folk alone fought against the oppressive and monopolistic colonial administration and it shows how valiant and responsible the Manipuri women are in the society, he added.
‘While observing the Day, let us all come and join hands to work together to fight all evils and vicious crimes in the society including crime against women and children. Only then our homage to those brave Imas will be meaningful,’ he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam said though women take the leading role in fighting against injustice crimes against women are increasing day by day.
A play was presented by the Nupi Lan Memorial Society on the occasion. As part of the observation race, entertainment programmes, competitions were also organised.
Governor Dr K K Paul said in a message that the movement of Manipuri women who revolted against the export of rice as there was near famine condition prevailing in the State popularly known as Nupi Lan occupies a unique place in the history of the State as courage, sacrifice and patriotism of Manipuri women came to the fore.(UNI)
