Dutt’s fifer gives Tripura upper hand against Jharkhand

Dhanbad: Rana Dutt grabbed five wickets in a brilliant pace-bowling spell as Tripura took early control of their Ranji Trophy cricket match against Jharkhand on the opening day here on Sunday. Dutt ripped through the Jharkhand top-order batting line-up with figures of 5/64 while his pace colleagues Manisankar Murasingh and Abhijit Sarkar took two wickets apiece to bundle the home side out for just 142 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Rutuja, Karman enter main round of tennis nationals

Pune: Rutuja Bhosale and Karman Kaur Thandi picked up two of the eight qualifying spots with hard-fought wins in the qualifying rounds of the NECC-ITF women’s USD 25,000 tennis tournament at the Deccan Gymkhana, here on Sunday. The 16th seeded Rutuja, who came here on two-week break from her college in the United States, was stretched a bit by Georgian Oksana Kalashnikova before the Indian prevailed in straight sets. After being forced to win the first set via tie-break, Pune girl Rutuja took control of her serves and returned well to upset Oksana’s rhythm. Rutuja won the tie-break 7-3 and then wrapped up the match by winning the second set to complete a 7-6 6-4 win. (pti)

India’s Prabhu wins U-13 title in Singapore Open Squash

Chennai: Top seed Navaneeth Prabhu of India came back from a game down to beat Nicolas Chee of Malaysia 8-11, 11-6, 11-8, 12-10 in the Boys’ Under-13 final of the Old Chang Kee Singapore Open Squash on Sunday. Another Indian Neel Joshi, who lost to Navaneeth in the semi-final, defeated Ishant Shah Atul Kumar of Malaysia 3-0 to finish third, according to a press release by Indian Squash Federation here on Sunday. In the women’s section, top seed Samitha Sivakumar lost to Liyen Teoh of Malaysia 7-11, 11-6, 7-11 9-11 to finish sixth in girls’ Under-13 division while J S Krithica finished seventh with a 11-3, 11-7 11-7 win over Vasundhara Vasanthan of Malaysia in the play-off.
