Sydney: The Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) is set to place a brass plaque outside the home-team dressing room in honour of Phil Hughes today, a day before the start of the fourth and final cricket Test between India and Australia here.
The brass plaque that will be installed by the SCG Trust on the brickwork at the top of the stairs that lead to the home team’s dressing room will feature a small bust of Hughes grinning face at the entrance of the Members’ Pavilion. It means the Australians will see his face each time they take and leave the field.
The plaque above the players’ race will also include details of Hughes’ career at the SCG, where he made his first-class debut for New South Wales in 2007 and played his first Test on Australian soil, against Pakistan in 2010. It will be an emotional moment for all present at the SCG on the first day of the Test on Tuesday as Hughes’s family will be at the grandstand to witness the match, just as his mother and sister were during the fateful Sheffield Shield match. “I think it’s a great thing that the Trust are going to do that for Phil and Phil’s family,” said Hughes’ close mate former Australia teammate David Warner.
“It’s one of those things where he would want us to keep going, keep smiling and keep playing the game that we love and the game that he loved. Every time we walk on and off the field, we’ll have a smile on our face and know that our little mate is with us.”
Six weeks have passed since the cricket world was rocked by the untimely demise of 25-year-old Hughes, who was struck on the helmet by a short-pitched delivery while batting for South Australia against his former team NSW in a Sheffield Shield match here. PTI
