SHILLONG: Syiem of Hima Khyrim, Balajied Syiem on Tuesday suggested that the State Government should come up with another bill in place of the draft Tenancy Verification Bill, 2013 which has been “completely rejected by the people”.
“As a violent reaction, we witnessed the copies of the bill being burnt by the people,” Syiem said in his recommendations to the committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh which was tasked with the job to examine the Meghalaya (Benami Transaction Prohibition) Act, 1980.
While pointing out the flaws in the Meghalaya (Benami Transaction Prohibition) Act, 1980, he said that the definition of the term ‘benami transaction’ in Section 2 (a) does not contain anything which suggests that it is illegal or harmful to legitimate business transactions between parties of any kind (whether tribal or non-tribal).
“Hence, the Act is rendered invalid by this definition because to prohibit a thing that does not harm is illogical,” Syiem said.
