Guwahati: The Assam State Election Commission is planning to schedule the 3rd election to the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District Council (BTAD) before the tenure of the present council ends on April 23 this year.
In this regard, a With a view to the various aspects related to the elections, the Commission on Monday called an all-party meeting which was presided over by H.N. Bora, IAS (Retd.), State Election Commissioner, Assam.
He briefed about the scheduling of elections in the last part of March so that the new council takes over before Bohag Bihu in early April.
The meeting was attended by S.N. Singh, IGP (Law & Order), Milton Queah, Joint Secretary (WPTBC), Madan Chandra Deka, Joint Secretary (Revenue), Dr. Anupam Kr. Roy, Principal Secretary (BTC) along with representatives from different political parties.
The parties gave their suggestions in regard to ensuring free and fair polls to the 40 constituencies of BTAD.
The BTAD was formed under the amended Sixth Schedule of the Constitution in accordance with Bodo Peace Accord signed in February, 2003 with the now disbanded Bodo Liberation Tiger (BLT) and Central government.
The first election to the BTAD was held in 2005 in which Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) came to the power and is still in the power in the council after winning the second BTAD polls in 2010.
The BPF is a political party formed mainly by former militants of the Bodo LiberationTiger (BLT).
