SHILLONG: Around 4000 Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) in the State boycotted the pulse polio immunization campaign which got underway in the State on Monday, complaining non-fulfillment of their long-pending demands.
The ASHAs also launched a three-day strike from Monday to protest the State Government’s inaction in appointing them as full-time government employees besides fulfillment of other demands including remuneration and full set of materials for conducting home delivery.
President of Joint Action Committee of ASHA Facilitators and Workers Haphilin Pyrtuh threatened to continue their agitation for a longer period of time if the State Government continued to remain adamant.
Monday’s strike was attended by more than 2000 ASHAs including facilitators and workers who converged in the State capital from across the State.
Pyrtuh claimed that the committee had received information that some ASHAs who refused to attend the pulse polio campaign had been threatened with termination.
Pyrtuh also alleged that the State Health Minister had promised to call the ASHAs for a meeting this month but there has been no communication till date.
