National Voters’ Day celebrations

NONGPOH: As part of the nationwide celebration of National Voters’ Day which commemorates the launching of the Election Commission of India on January 25, 1950, the office of the District Election Officer, Ri Bhoi District in collaboration with the District Sport Officer, Ri Bhoi organised a National Voters’ Day run for men (5 Km) and women (3 Km) on Saturday.
The run was flagged off by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Election), D. Hynniewta, in the presence of Extra Assistant Commissioner (Election), D.D. Syngai and District Sport Officer, P.M. Marbaniang. Representatives of Nongpoh Sports & Cultural Association & Ri Bhoi Sports Association were also present on the occasion.
Hunlang Kongor emerged the winner of the run in the men’s category while Missequeen Sylliang bagged the honour in the women’s category.
The prize money of Rs. 5000 each will be distributed to the winners at a function to be held at the Science Hall, Nongpoh on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Deputy Commissioner (Election), South West Garo Hills organised the ‘Young Voters’ Festival’ at Ampati on Thursday as a run up to the National Voters’ Day celebration.
During the festival various competitions like quiz, debate and extempore speech were conducted where students from all Higher Secondary Schools and Colleges participated with full enthusiasm.
Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, Ram Singh lauded the participative spirit of the students who attended the event. He highlighted the importance of participating in such competitions and encouraged the students to aim for participation at higher levels.
Earlier, H D B Sangma, ADC (Election) and ERO 55-Salmanpara LAC highlighted the objectives of SVEEP and underscored the eligibility for enrolment in the electoral roll.
