Excavation work for Ganol project begins

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has started the excavation work for the much delayed Ganol Hydel power project in Garo Hills.
MeECL senior engineer, Elias Lyngdoh informed that the construction work would follow post the excavation and land for the project has already been identified.
The proposed project would be of great benefit for the Garo Hills region which reels under power cuts especially during summer. The 22.5 mw power project was meant to be taken up in 2007 but frequent changes in Government delayed the project.
The project is being funded through NLCPR funds.
When asked about the necessary clearances which are required for the project, the official said that since this is a small hydro project, clearances are not required from Union ministries and the project can be implemented with the necessary approvals and clearances of the State Government departments. It may be mentioned that over the years, successive governments have blamed each other for the delay in the project.
