JOWAI: An under trial prisoner (UTP) who escaped from Shillong Civil Hospital on January 22 surrendered before the police in Shillong on Saturday.
The UTP, Deimon Dhar of Kyndong Tuber, a murder accused escaped from Shillong Civil Hospital despite the presence of police personnel.
It was after the UTP complained of sudden illness that he was taken to Shillong Civil Hospital with police escort from Jowai.
Two constables on duty C Syngkon and L Pasi were suspended following his escape.
It was under pressure from the police that he surrendered before the East Khasi Hills SP on Saturday.
Soon after he escaped from Civil Hospital, the UTP was taking shelter in the residence of a co accused in the murder case who is a disabled person, police said.
On Saturday, the UTP called up a friend in Jowai to send some money. After getting clues, the police and the friend of the UTP came to Shillong and informed him over phone that the required amount was ready. The UTP sent the disabled person to collect the money which resulted in his detention. Later, while proceeding to the hide out of the UTP, he escaped only to surrender later due to the pressure from police.
