Discussion on role of labour inspectors
SHILLONG: KSU members met Labour Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Monday to discuss the role of labour inspectors appointed to detect ‘illegal’ labourers entering the State.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, KSU president Daniel Khyriem said that the Minister has informed that most of the inspectors will join work from March 2015.
It may be mentioned that the department has appointed 39 labour inspectors who are currently undergoing training and only nine are performing their duties at the moment.
Stating that the labour inspectors should ensure that labourers entering the State fulfill all the criteria of the Inter-State Migrant Workmen Regulation Act 2011, the Union president said that the KSUhas agreed to coordinate with the Labour Department on the matter.
Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the meeting exchanged ideas on how to make the labour inspectors more effective.
She also admitted that at present, “there are gaps and areas of improvement exist” as far as restricting the entry of ‘illegal’ labourers into the State is concerned.
