Guwahati: The updating of National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam will be completed as per schedule in January next year, while a legacy data will be published earlier to ensure smooth conduct of the updating process. The NRC will be vital for detection of illegal migrants coming to the state after 1971.
Prateek Hajela, Com-mission and Secretary, Home and Political depart-ment, and state coordinator for NRC updating process, on Monday informed the dates for the formal issue of application, submission of names and others will be announced within two weeks.
The draft NRC will be published by October-November this year and about a month will be allowed for objections and omissions. “The final NRC will be published in January 2016, as per schedule,” Mr Hajela said.He added that there were some ‘elements’ who did not want the NRC updating process to be completed but the government was committed to meet its target of January 2016 for the final document.
He said, “The illegal refugees who came to the state post-1971 have an interest in not updating the NRC.”He further said a ‘legacy data’ of electoral rolls before 1971 and NRC of 1961 will be published so
that people who have their families’ names in these documents can enter their names into the new NRC without any hassles.
For people whose families’ names do not appear in these documents but are bonafide residents, the government will annou-nce a list of documents that can be submitted as residential proof.
Assam government has tied up with Wipro as the system integrator for the NRC updating process. As many as 2500 NRC seva-kendras would be set up across the state for the NRC updating process, which will engage over 30,000 people, both directly and indirectly.
People residing in the state prior to March 21, 1971, will have their names enlisted in the NRC, which is viewed as a vital document to identify the illegal migrants in the state.
The updating of the NRC basically means the process of enlisting the names of all genuine citizens
residing in Assam at the time of the NRC updation. The only time that a NRC was prepared was in 1951 after conduct of the Census of 1951.
The NRC was prepared by recording particulars of all the persons
enumerated during that Census.
