Japanese girl’s mobile phone, camera, 5000 Yen recovered
Jaipur: A mobile phone, camera and 5,000 Yen were on Monday recovered from the main accused in the rape case of a Japanese girl, police said. The items were recovered the items following interrogation of the key accused Ajit Singh Choudhary and seven others, IG Police Jaipur Range D C Jain said. Ajit alias Jeetram had broken the phone’s sim card after the rape and had handed it over along with the money and the phone to his accomplice, police said. The motorcycle used during the crime was also recovered from the other accused, Ravindra Singh, who is in police custody, he said, adding, a gift which was given by the victim to Ajit’s relative at the house of another accused, Shivraj, was also recovered. The main accused in the Japanese tourist rape case had surrendered before the police on February 13 and later he was arrested by the Dudu police. Rajasthan Police had announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh for any information about Ajit. On February 10, seven persons, namely Vahid, Abrar, Shivraj, Rajveer, Ramveer, Ravindra and Dharamveer, were detained in connection with the case. The next day they were remanded to police custody by a local court. The seven accused were identified by the victim, police said, adding, a case under relevant sections of IPC has been registered against them and Ajit. The 25-year-old Japanese girl was allegedly raped by an Indian youth at a deserted place near Dudu, Jaipur on February 8 night. The victim had come to Pink city as a tourist and was visiting Jal Mahal when the youth (25 years) lured her on the pretext of taking her sight-seeing. (PTI)
Saradha scam: Former Bengal DGP gets conditional bail
Kolkata: Former West Bengal DGP (Armed Police) Rajat Majumdar, who was arrested by the CBI in September last in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam, was on Monday granted conditional bail by the Calcutta High Court. A division bench of justices Subhrokamal Mukherjee and Indrajit Chatterjee granted bail to Majumdar against a surety of Rs 1 lakh. He has been directed to surrender his passport and asked to stay within Kolkata and Bidhannagar police station areas and report to CBI once in a week. Appearing for Majumdar, his counsel Anindya Mitra and Milon Mukherjee submitted that CBI could not neither provide any evidence of his alleged involvement in the scam, nor provide any evidence of his being involved in money collection business of Saradha group. The CBI counsel opposed Majumdar’s bail prayer. Majumdar, who worked as Director General (Armed Police) in West Bengal, was arrested by the CBI on September 9 for his alleged involvement in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam. (PTI)
Woman doctor arrested for torturing tribal woman
Phulbani: A woman doctor was arrested in Odisha’s Kandhamal district on charge of torturing and harassing a pregnant tribal woman who was her domestic help, a senior police officer said on Monday. Ambika Mohapatra (45), an AYUSH doctor (ayurvedic/ homeopath) at Katringia Health centre, was arrested and sent to jail on Sunday on the basis of an FIR lodged at Sadar Police Station by the 25-year-old complainant, said Sub-Divisional Police Officer Prabhat Panigrahi on Monday. In the FIR lodged on Saturday, the woman hailing from Gochapada area in the district alleged that the lady doctor, who was unmarried, had brought her here about two months ago, Officer In-Charge of Sadar police station, T R Nayak said. Since then the complainant had been working as a domestic help at the house of the doctor in Patrapada area of Phulbani, he said, adding, instead of taking care of the pregnant woman the doctor harassed and tortured her, according to the complaint. It was alleged that the doctor had been physically and mentally torturing the tribal woman and even locked her inside the house while going out, the OIC said quoting the FIR. Following advice of her relatives and village seniors, the tribal woman finally lodged the FIR on Saturday and the doctor was sent to jail after being produced before court. (PTI)
