SHILLONG: Following the recent political developments in the KHADC, the UDP leadership has urged the regional parties who are part of the ruling coalition – All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA) – in the Council to remain united until the completion of its full term.
“We would like to urge the various regional parties who are part of ARPA to remain intact. We want to make it very clear that the UDP will remain with the ruling coalition till the end of its term,” UDP general secretary Allantry F Dkhar said in a statement on Monday.
The UDP made the appeal after some MDCs, including those from the opposition, raised questions on the efficiency of Chief Executive Member (CEM) Adelbert Nongrum.
Among those that have raised doubts on the leadership of Nongrum are Mawhati MDC James Sylliang (Independent) and Sohryngkham MDC Pyniaid N Syiem (HSPDP).
Informed sources have revealed that even UDP MDCs are unhappy with the performance of the present CEM. But none of them are willing to come out in the open with their grievances.
“The UDP MDCs are unhappy with Nongrum since he is slow in taking any decision,” the sources said.
With the KHADC session scheduled to start from February 23, Nongrum is set to face a volley of attack from both opposition and ruling MDCs who are unhappy with his ‘style of functioning’.
Meanwhile, a senior Congress MDC has said that the party was yet to decide on moving a No-confidence Motion against Nongrum.
“The Parliamentary Party of the Congress-led opposition KHUDA is scheduled to meet in the next few days to discuss the issues which we are going to raise in the upcoming session,” the Congress MDC said.
He, however, said that there was no need to move the No-confidence Motion since internal forces in the ARPA are keen to dislodge Nongrum from his chair.
“We have seen how former CEM Ardent Basaiawmoit had to go due to internal rumblings within the ruling coalition,” the Congress MDC added.
